She
sings like a canary from her native Canary Islands.
Then she whirls, looks you straight in the eye,
waits until you smile, and sings again. Her
music is a combination of those torch-songs
that came from the 1940s and 1950s records and
movies, and the songs of Elvis Presley. The
music is timeless, the style, intriguing, the
performer, world-class.
Welcome
to the world of Katiuska Hanohano, whose friendly
style complements a voice which cuts through
the air like a cold knife, then melts its way
into your heart like warm butter.
"My
voice, like my soul, harkens back to a time
one, maybe two generations ago...a time I would
have loved to have lived. It's not just an attraction
to the music so much as it is a natural talent,
singing the style of music back when singing
mattered," Hanohano says.
And
Katiuska has the credentials to show for her
style. "I was born to sing them."
"Them" includes the big voices of
a bygone era. Frank Sinatra. Billie Holiday.
And Mel Torme, one of the best, but most neglected,
voices of the post-war era. Katiuska achieved
a dream of hers when she managed to attend a
concert of his in Denver, Colorado, a few years
before his death. She also got to speak to
him backstage after his performance. And, coincidentally,
she got to meet and become friends with producer
Tracy Torme, son of Mel Torme.
"These voices and people taught me what
sentimental soul singing is all about. The world
must never forget those times and that style...a
style literally without frontiers."
It
is a timeless style, Katiuska says, where "vocalization,
heart, soul, sentiment and singing the truth
marked all of us in future generations with
the pressing need to emulate the unique and
timeless style of real music."
And
among those who sang the style, Marilyn Monroe
is at the top of her list.
"I
never prepared for singing her music. It comes
naturally, a gift from God, I feel her...that
is all." And Katiuska, the young rising
starlet with the cutting-edge voice, has the
same feelings for two others of Monroe's era.
"My imitations of Ava Gardner and Rita
Hayworth 'double' their voices in their films.
It's a gift from God, and comes naturally. I
have their essence, so I don't need to prepare
for singing their songs. I was born to be, and
sing, them. Those,
Katiuska says, are styles of the torch singers,
and a Hollywood film and music era that will
never die. "They are unique, and the music
style also is unique. And that is why, internationally,
they will continue to gain in popularity and
style. These bygone music stars are always alive
in people like me, Marilyn, Rita, and Ava. There
are no frontiers in this music. It is timeless."
But
the most important musical influence on Katiuska
is Elvis. "Elvis
Presley has been my mentor, my teacher, since
I was four years old," she claims. "We
share a unique singing soul that will never
die. He taught me to be strong and to involve
the matters of my heart in singing......to be
free. And he never leaves my soul, he is always
beside me, inside me. He is always there, and
as such, I'm a female Elvis."
Katiuska
is razor-sharp on her observations. The music
of Elvis, and the era of rock 'n' roll he developed,
will stay with the world much as Italian opera
continues its immense popularity, though its
composers and singers have gone many years ago.
Katiuska points to "...the rising album
sales, the skyrocketing Elvis movie popularity
and the growing list of those of us who sing
his music, proving that Elvis is number ONE
again in the world lately. True talent never
dies."
One
only has to listen to Katiuska's rendition of
Elvis' "Flaming
Star" to understand her adoration of
"The King." In that performance you
will hear a voice that cuts through the air
with piercing yet pleasing clarity, strong in
purpose, with all the attributes of the world-class
divas when THEY were all so young.
The
big Katiuska voice reflects a world-class heritage.
Born of international parents (from Canary Islands
and Hawaii), this young surprise is internationally
educated, translates languages, and spends time
handling language translations for a world clientele
when she's not singing.
Does
the international background affect her style
on stage?
"Absolutely,
and what a great question. Always, anytime,
anywhere, my Hawaiian and Canary-Islander heart
is always there. I have been taught that cultural
heritage and education, people and the world's
emerging cultures, will enrich your life...
always. To my many fans around the globe I owe
respect, and in every journey-day of my singing
life, they will always be there in my heart
and soul. As it is in the style of Elvis and
Marilyn, Rita and Ava, there are no frontiers
when singing, and all respect and love goes
out to these singers as well as to those who
hear me sing their music. And I owe my heart
to my mother and father, who raised me as they
did.
So, what did that family life bring to Katiuska's
outlook? What was it her mom and dad did that
helped build this influential young torch singer?
Parental
influence helped, but it is her mission, the
purpose of it all, that goes straight to the
heart of her soul.
"My purpose is simple: I sing because I
was born to sing. My singing here is for the
world to share. My voice is a gift, and I use
it to open frontiers for many. I want to make
people happy, but at the same time I strive
to create paths to understanding, to share my
soul with everyone I meet. And to grow as a
singer. I must teach and help people create.
This is my mission in the world; my life is,
and will always be, a singer."
For
Katiuska Hanohano, the purpose of life, and
living, goes deep to the very center of her
soul. For those of us fortunate enough to have
met her and know her, and for the countless
thousands who will hear that clear voice brighten
the world like freshness of the air after a
thunderstorm, we'll be watching and listening,
as Katiuska's music and message broaden our
visions of new, boundless horizons.
